Hager is Sarah's Egyptian slave who is given to Abraham by Sarah as a concubine. When she is pregnant with Ishmael, Hagar is so bullied by Sarah that she flees to the desert and has a special encounter with God there. After Ishmael's birth, Hagar is sent away with her son by Abraham and again she has a special encounter with God in the desert.
