In this creative prayer idea the children make their own lava lamp

Different people in the Bible created an altar as a way to thank God or to worship Him. In this activity the children can build a lava lamp as an alter, an altar that we can use to thank God for all the good things He has given us. Or maybe use to worship God with.

What you need:

  • a large glass bowl
  • a light that you can place underneath this bowl. In the video we have used a mobile phone.
  • vegetable oil
  • a glass of water
  • yellow and red food colouring
  •  broken up pieces of effervescent tablet - such as vitamin C tablets, or those used to clean dentures.

Introduction

Different people in the Bible created an altar as a way to thank God or to worship Him. They would collect a big pile of stones, put a sacrificial animal on these stones and burn it. 

An altar that we can use to thank God for all the good things He has given us. Or maybe use to worship God with. Of course we can't use a fire or an animal, but maybe we can use a lava lamp…

In the video below we will show how you can create a lava lamp in a very quick and simple way, as an alternative way for the children to build an altar. 

Instructions

Place a light underneath the large glass bowl. Pour vegetable oil into this bowl. Add the yellow and the red water. Wait for the water to sink to the bottom and mix it a little bit. Now you are ready!

Give all the children a piece of broken up effervescent tablet.

Ask them to think about something that they want to thank or praise God for.

As they drop their piece of effervescent tablet into the oil they can say out loud what it is they want to thank or praise God for.  

As we watch our altar will come to life!
