What you need:

  • a bucket or container filled with "dirty" slime (made by mixing inexpensive bath foam with sawdust, boiled spaghetti, or wet gingerbread)
  • one stone per child
  • an extra stone with the name "Jesus," the letter "J," or a crown
  • good-quality black markers
  • a bowl of water to rinse the stones

Let's start...

Instructions

At the bottom of the bucket, there is one stone for each child, as well as the Jesus stone. Who can find Jesus?

The children can take it in turns to put their hand in the 'slime' and pull out a stone, which they can rinse and keep.

Once the Jesus stone is discovered, have everyone wash their hands.

Place the Jesus stone in the middle of the group and say: Joseph and Mary were worried. Would they be able to find Jesus? They searched for three days. Fortunately, they found him.

Ask:
- Did you know that Jesus promised to always be with us?
- Should we still try to find Jesus?

Explain:

Although it may seem unnecessary, that's exactly what we should do.

Ask:
- How can that be? Jesus is already with us, so why does he want us to search for him?

Explain:
Jesus wants us to find him. We can seek him in our prayers, our songs, and by listening. We can find him at church or at home when we pray. We can search for Jesus without fear. In fact, he wants to be found.

Jesus wants to take us to his Father's house.

Do:
Have each child write their name or the initial of their name on their stone.

This idea will continue later with the creative prayer activity 'In My Father's House'
